Delorentos are from Dublin, Ireland. Based in pop rock music without any label but honesty, fun and good compositions, the 4-piece band have released a beautiful new album called Night becomes light. What you can find inside is much more than you can imagine: lyrics that will make you think and cheer up yourself, stories of experiences that will help you in the never-ending search of that light we all need to be happy and extremely contagious melodies.
During their last visit to Spain we were able to spend some fantastic time with them by the lights of Madrid downtown.
LBM – OK, LET’S FORGET THE NUMBERS, BUT WHAT DO YOU SAY ABOUT THE LETTERS?
Níal – I think in this age where everything is digital, a hand-written letter could mean so much more. I think probably we made a mistake, we shouldn’t actually have forgotten the letters. I think we should forget everything, get over it!
LBM – SO YOU NEVER WRITE LETTERS, JUST WRITE LYRICS (laughs)
LBM – IS YOUR ALBUM REALLY A LIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS MONOTONY?
Ro – If people think that, that’s a big compliment I guess
LBM – WE THINK IT IS!
Níal_I’m glad you like it! I think it doesn’t matter whether your life or existence is in a particular moment in time, it’s not always boring, there’s always something you’re interested in. I think ultimately that’s the point of the album, we didn’t have a concept in the album but a theme merged, both musically and lyrically: no matter how dark things get, there’s always a moment when it can only get better and that’s probably the most important thing to remember. It came out naturally.
LBM – IS BEING BACK AT THE STAGE LIKE FEELING AT HOME AGAIN?
Ro – I feel this week in some ways cause we finished the tour in Ireland of the album. A lot of the songs when we recorded the album we decided to have no rules, forget about the numbers and just make a challenging album that we felt it was new for us and explore. So the process of transferring the music from recordings into the stage was being quite challenging. So I feel the Irish tour was a lot about figuring things out and now that we are here in Spain, it feels like ready, and also we have a lot of good memories from here. So it always feels like we are home again, yes.
Níal – Spain has a very special place in our hearts and even the first two shows have been great and the reaction to our music has been fantastic so I just can’t wait for tomorrow!
LBM – DO YOU THINK THAT DUBLIN IS WORTH HAVING A LOVE SONG?
Níal – Yeah, I think so. Obviously it’s the city we grew up in. Dublin like Ireland is a very small place and the amounts it has achieved is disproportioned to its size. You think of the musicians, the writers, the scientists… people that have come from Dublin. It’s smaller than most European cities but it has everything, it has the feel of a town but the ambition of a city. It’s influenced everything that we’ve done positively so Dublin definitely deserves a love song.
LBM – WHAT IS HIDDEN BEHIND DELORENTOS DARK NIGHT?
Ro – If you give a listen to the album, you’ll see it’s very real, honest album, it reflects how much we love Dublin, all the people that we love… and our dark side as well. I think it’s embracing both sides. It turns into our personal darkness, every time you do something you really care about there’s always a phase where you can’t see the end. I think making a new album always feels like the first one. That struggle is really important.
LBM – TOP 5 MOST AMAZING MISUNDERSTANDING SITUATIONS OUT OF IRELAND
Níal – A friend of us travelled to the States without the Visa. He got stopped, he was carrying his guitar and he just said: I don’t know, I don’t know. He got arrested and sent back and never go into the States again. That was a pretty bad Irish musical misunderstanding.
Ro – I can only think of Kieran, he’s making some effort to learn some Spanish. He’s using this app I can’t remember now, there are so many words in English and Spanish that are similar… and Kieran keeps using this in restaurants and Sebas (manager) says: You can’t use this, it’s rude! Technically it’s correct but it sounds like a robot, a real person never says this!
So probably we’ve had more embarrassing situations that we’ve realized.
LBM – WHAT’S THE STRANGEST PLACE YOU EVER PLAYED IN?
Ro – Moscow was weird. I remember it was snowing, freezing cold and we were wearing our regular sneakers. They use these chemicals on the paths to melt the snow but they are really strong and our shoes were dissolved. We just looked like poor musicians! We tried this traditional Russian vodka, like 80%… because everybody thinks: Irish, you’d have loads of this… and we had only a little taste.
Níal – The only thing I can think of is the first time we went to Toronto: we booked a place to stay that looked great on the internet. We arrived at 2 in the morning, the area seemed to be rough… we went into this hotel and the taxi man said: I’m not staying. We went upstairs and… You know what a half-way house is? When you get out of prison and you’re given a place to be while you try to get back into society. That’s what it was basically. There were shared shower facilities and we got in the room and there was only one double bed with glue stains. We barricaded the door and waited until the sun came up to get the f*ck out of there!
Ro – And the next time we went back there it was worse! We booked a place that was like the movie «Saw». It was crazy.
LBM – NOW THAT YOU ARE THE LIGHT, ARE YOU NOT A S.E.C.R.E.T. ANYMORE?
Níal – I think because we released four albums and three of them were independent, there’s a small pocket of people around the world that know our band so as much as we would like to say YES in answer to your question. We still like going to a new city like Memphis or Valencia and find surprising people. This is the first time our album’s been released by a record label… so YES and NO is the answer to your question.
LBM – DO YOU FEEL YOU’RE ONE STEP HIGHER NOW?
Ro – Definitely! It’s nice to have some more people /with the record label/ so we can focus more. We had this conversation today, we’re not great business men so it’s good we can focus on what we’re good at, music.
LBM – WHAT IS THE AUDIENCE FAVOURITE SONG LIVE NOW, WHAT DO YOU FEEL?
Níal – There are lots of songs now that we have four albums, you feel the old ones don’t have the same energy cause you played them a lot so you stop playing them and surprisingly I find a different meaning in them, like if somebody else has written it.
Ro – Sanctuary always, it’s always the same passion. It always feels really strong to me. The recent ones, well, Home Again means a lot to us. It builds and builds.. it’s a very sensitive song. It feels kind of special.
LBM – WOULD YOU TELL US 3 THINGS YOU CONSIDER TOO LATE FOR DELORENTOS?
Níal – Dance moves.
Ro – Professional football career.
Níal – Haircuts.
LBM – WHERE DO YOU KEEP THE MUSIC?
Níal -We’ve got into vinyl records recently. Although I have a lot of mp3s, the vinyl is so much better. It is nice to take out the sleeve, the artwork….
Ro -Night becomes light is our first album on vinyl. I think it’s lovely, you put it on and listen to the whole thing.
