Greg and Tessa form Still Corners, together they show an impressive presence in atmospheric rock combining their love for the cinema and their passion for discovering new places, both geographically and musically. They have just started their world tour to present «Slow Air», their fourth album. At the end of May we will be lucky enough to see them live in Barcelona 26th and in Madrid 27th. As they were getting ready to pack they had some time to answer our questions about the direction they tend to go.
LBM: WHERE DOES THE AIR THAT MOVES STILL CORNERS COME FROM?
Tessa: The name Slow Air comes from the sultry Texas heat where we wrote and recorded the album. The air is so hot and heavy it’s causes everything and everyone to slow down so we named the album after that.
LBM: YOU’VE CHANGED THE ENGLISH SEASIDE FOR THE ARID TEXAS TO MAKE THIS NEW ALBUM. IS GEOGRAPHY TRULY SO INFLUENTIAL TO YOUR COMPOSITIONS?
Greg: The environment you’re in really shapes your mind, it influences you far more than you can imagine. So we move around a lot and the records do seem to change. With Slow Air, Texas is so big, you can drive for hours and not see anybody. That sense of space and isolation we tried to capture with the album. We now live in upstate NY so we’ll see where that takes us.
LBM: IN SPAIN WE HAVE THIS SAYING THAT READS: LESS IS MORE. DO YOU FEEL THAT SLOW AIR SOUNDS MORE MINIMAL, MORE ATTACHED TO THE VERY ESSENCE OF YOUR MUSIC? WAS IT SOMETHING WORKED ON PURPOSE?
Greg: I fully agree that less is more in almost everything except chocolate and coffee where more is definitely better. Slow Air was written very quickly so we would avoid having our brains get in the way too much and that really is a form of minimalism. All the material is straight from writing sessions and when we recorded we didn’t do lots of overdubs or retakes, I think this made a more immediate and honest album.
LBM: IF YOU COULD MAKE A SOUNDTRACK FOR A FILM, WHAT TYPE OF FILM WOULD RATHER WORK WITH?
Tessa: We’re big fans of Peter Weir (Witness, Picnic at Hanging Rock) so we’d like to do something like that, where atmosphere is part of the film and nature is included. Nature is one of our biggest influences!
LBM: CAN LIGHT BE FOUND IN A BLACK LAGOON?
Greg: Light can be found anywhere but should also come from within. You yourself should be a lighthouse.
LBM: ARE DREAMS, STILL NOWADAYS, POSSIBLE? SUBQUESTION: IS TOURING AROUND THE WORLD ONE OF YOURS?
Tessa: It’s always important to keep dreaming, much of the world is still unknown. Touring has showed us there’s so much we don’t know and haven’t experienced. There are so many people and cultures, it’s amazing to witness that and it’s one of the reasons we like to tour so much.
LBM: WHAT IS BEST TO CAPTURE A MOMENT IN LIFE: A SONG OR A PHOTOGRAPH?
Greg: A photograph is a picture of a dead moment. It’s in the past and no longer exists and in that way a photo is sad. But a song captures the essence of a moment and allows you to feel it first hand when you listen. Therefore I think song is the superior format for capturing life’s moments.
LBM: WHAT IS THE STRANGEST THING YOU HAVE HEARD/READ ABOUT YOUR MUSIC?
Tessa: In the early years people thought I was Rachel Goswell from Slowdive.
«Light can be found anywhere but should also come from within.»

LBM: WHEN ARE YOU COMING TO SPAIN? WHAT KIND OF CONNECTION DO YOU FEEL WITH THE LOCAL AUDIENCE?
Tessa: We’ve always had an incredible time in Spain. The people have always been interesting, kind and above all else fun! So we’re really happy to return. I’d like to live in Spain one day, any suggestions?
